IH C200 engine, oil out breather smells like gas

Need some advice. Have 1968 IH 544 with C200 engine. Limited use tractor (10 hrs yearly). Started the other day and after 10 minutes idle oil started coming out breather (spitting out, I'm guessing around 1 to 2 oz in 10 min). Oil was a gas smell to it and looks very runny, oil is strait 30 wgt low ash. Also getting oil leaking around head and intake when cold, this leak stops when warmed up.

Couple of questions:

1) how bad is this condition. Can I just keep changing oil.

2) what do I need to look at for troubleshooting. Can check cylinders for compression and have replaced headgaskets on auto engines.

3) assume gas in oil is coming thru rings. My plugs do get fouled up after about 20 hrs run time.

4) my oil looks very thin with carbon deposits in it. Perhaps this is the oil and gas not completely mixing.

Appreciate any thoughts on this condition and how I should proceed.

My first thought is nothing wrong, you need to work it. I would change the oil to a rotella/delvac 15W-40, run the snot out of it, then change the oil.

How often do you change oil.

Change the oil and filter, and do some repair work on the carburetor. I'm guessing the float valve and seat are leaking, or the float has sunk. That is how the gasoline got into the oil.

I agree.Work the snot outof it.Get the temp up operating temp.Tractors are made to work.Just poopin around the yard is very hard on them. Can cause the symtoms you describe.Since it sits so much, could be the float sticking (open).Turn the gas off between uses. You could have other issues aas well.

Does that engine have a mechanical fuel pump mounted on the engine block? If so, you may have a bad diaphragm in the pump that allows gas into the oil.

agree on the fuel pump issue, this will certainly cause gas in oil before anything else.

I have had tractors fill the air filter with oil when the needle valve sticks open, they can drain a tank on some motors.(now I always turn the gas off when I park one)

Take a sample of the suspect oil and put a teaspoon ful on a piece of paper towel. Do the same with a sample of the same oil from the bottle.
Ignite both in a safe place and see how they burn. The contaminated sample will ignite easily and burn much faster. Jim

Never thought about the fuel pump. Yes I have a mechanical fuel pump on side of motor. Replaced in 2001.

Will check the oil drain plug for water. If no water will change oil and see what happens.

Will check the carb. Will let you know what I find out

Thanks

Finally got a chance to look at tractor. Drained the oil, no water (thank goodness). Removed carb, took apart, everything looked good, cleaned, reinstalled. Took fuel pump out. Removed top (low pressure side) cover, looked like been at the bottom of the ocean. Lot of gritty stuff and some rust. Removed bottom section, little bit of grit mostly clean. Hit the diaphragm with pressure from carb cleaner can, couldn't see any leaks. reinstalled.

Tired to start tractor up. Wouldn't start at first. Then would start with heavy chock, black smoke coming out exhaust, engine runs for about 30 sec and stalls out. Repeated a few times drained battery.

Couple of questions:

1) put 7 QT of oil in engine. Dipstick reads way to high. Assume dipstick is wrong (could be no original to tractor). Confirm 7 QT is the correct amount to put in.

2) manually pressed level on fuel pump and fuel came out. Is this enough of a test to verify correctly working fuel pump. Should I look at anything else. With all the crude in there (cleaned out) should I replace anyways, replaced in 2002. Was damaged with bought tractor. Inside of my fuel tank heavy rust. Have filter on my shut off and inline fuel filter (obviously not enough), what kind of filter do I need to add to keep gunk out of my fuel pump?

3) Am I missing anything. Should I just change out the plugs (usually fixes my problems) and see if it will run?

Any thought greatly appreciated. Thank you.

update 10/25, changed out the plugs. Old plugs were fouled, black gritty stuff (not metal). Engine started right up with new plugs. Still getting black/white exhaust out tailpipe. White smoke and gas smelling water out breather. Ran for about 45 min hoping to clean things out. going to have to do more troubleshooting.
