Questions On Electrall

Today I got a call from a local Auction yard that they have an IH Electrall mounted on a trailer and converted to PTO drive? Never seen one so went and looked at it. Says International Harvester Electrall and GE Insignia on it and mounted on 2 wheel cart and pto driven with belts and has a generator mounted . The thing is so cool and looks like always in the shed so nice shape. Anybody shed any light on this unit?

Way nice units Several outputs including 3 phase. If scrap price, own it. They sell well as aux power. Jim

The trailer mounted Electrall is the most commonly found electrall generator. They are rated at 12.5 KW and have outlets for 208 volt 3 phase, 120/208 volt single phase (can be used for 120/240 volt loads in your house) and 120 volt single phase. The early trailer mounted electralls have the plug connections on the bottom, just like the tractor mounted units. The later trailer mounted electralls had a connection box mounted on top of the generator, which was much more convenient than crawling underneath to plug in a power cord. A trailer mounted electrall in good condition will typically sell usually sell at auction for $2K-$3K. Along with the tractor mounted and trailer mounted electralls, IH also sold a fast hitch version and a truck mounted version of the electrall.

From Wikipedia:

"The Electrall system was introduced in 1954;
it was a short-lived attempt to market
electrically operated farm equipment and
accessories. The system, co-developed with
General Electric, consisted of a 208V three
phase alternating current generator connected
with electric cables to the device to be
powered. The generator could even power a
household. A 10 kW Electrall generator was an
option on the Farmall 400 tractor, and there
also was a 12.5 kW PTO-driven version. The
possible applications of Electrall power were
many, but few made it to market. IH marketing
materials showed a haybaler being Electrall
powered. One of the more novel applications of
the Electrall was a device to electrocute
insects in the field at night (basically like a
modern-day bug zapper, but on a larger scale)."

From RPRU 2014, some of this display is from Don. Hope its okay that I post pictures. All the Elecrtall were just amazing to see run something. Best part was seeing it run the baler, I noticed the tractor was 90 degree to the baler. Then the baler started moving.

Redturbo, Did you know that your Dad and Mom stopped at my shop today? I had to give your Dad a tour of my shop and tractor collection. They were sure a long ways from home.

I sure didn't know that. What a cool place to stop! Havent seen them in close to a month ago. Guessing they are going to put 4500 miles on this trip. I bet you have an Electrall hiding in your shop?

Redturbo - no problem posting any pictures of my electrall tractor or electric baler! It was kinda good to relive the RPRU for a moment there. The SW6TA diesel with electrall and the trailer electrall belongs to my friend Mike Wiegmann from Breese, IL. Just for the sake of a little advertising, Mike's SW6TA is sporting one of my reproduction electrall gearboxes! DonO
