C123 engine head gasket

Posting for a friend, I usually hang out on the green forum. My friend is having problems getting the head gasket not to leak coolant on a C123 combine engine. He's had the head milled, tried adding block sealer and 2 new gaskets, any suggestions?

I had trouble that way with my 123 engine also, but i had visible cavitation on top of the block,so i had it to have it decked. If your friend has it decked, make sure he has a very competent machinist do it !

just went through this. the manual said 45lbs. torque but it needs to be higher. I can't remember off the top of my head 65 maybe. Google the torque for tractors using that engine, 130, 140 and that should come up with the correct torque.

If I'm not mistaken the original torque is 65 ft-lbs, but it was raised to 80 ft-lbs.

At 45 ft-lbs no wonder it's leaking!

You're correct. Couldn't remember exact numbers. It will definately leek at 65. 80 got the job done.

Replaced a head gasket on a 123 engine and went to 85 lb on the head bolts. The torque is higher in later manuals. I had no problem.

Is your friend more confused now then ever ? I am real curious what combine this engine is on? My dad bought a new NO.64 IHC combine in 1953, That i think had the 123 engine, all i remember is that it could manhandle that job. Let us know what he eventually figures out!!!
