coils getting hot ....12v.....alt. said to use lamp, then fuse..do i use coil with or without resister....thanks dewy

On a 12 volt tractor you obviously use a 12 volt coil or else use a 6 volt coil PLUS an external series voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor.

A 12 volt coil may be labeled "12 Volts" or "12 Volts NOT for use with ballast resistor"

HOWEVER if its labeled "12 volts for use with ballast" IT MEANS WHAT IT SAYS and requires a ballast

Have you checked battery voltage?? If the voltage regulator is bad it may be raising battery voltage to 15 volts or so which will raise coil temperature plus it will cook the battery eventually plus acid will boil over.

A 6 Volt coil (needs ballast on a 12 volt tractor) has a LV Primary resistance of around 1.25 to 2 ohms while a 12 volt (no ballast required) will be more like 2.5 to under 4 ohms.

Dewy do a search under my name. On my 200 the coil gets pretty hot. I would say 150 degrees or so.

As the others said, use a ballast resistor (mid 60s chevrolet, or chrysler ignition resistor will do) the fuse is the same as 6v, and the lamps need to be 12v. (they have nothing to do with the coil however) Jim

napa IC14SB is a native 12v coil. no resistor needed.

no extra connections at a resistor, less chances for soemthing to go wrong.
