What is this?

Tearing down my M for rebuild. This is one of the head studs that was there, third stud from from front of engine. Looks like some kind of temperature sender as bottom piece would be in the water jacket next to the cylinders. Was not hooked up to anything.

looks like it was an engine heater to heat the coolant for cold weather starting.

Ha! That's great, I wouldn't thought of that. It's a shame the electrical connection is broken off. It's probably as much of an antique as the tractor is!

Only problem is that you can never get the proper torque on it. Put a bolt in that hole & retorque after a few heat cycles. Then if you still plan on using it, drain the block & change it. Tighten at your own risk.
