1935 TD40

It is finally here, the trucker delivered it a few days ago. 1935 International TD40. This is the first diesel tractor that IHC made, it was introduced in 1932 I believe. I do have the radiator and hood for it and I also got a complete spare engine for it as well. This is my first crawler tractor and my first diesel tractor too. Engine is 4-3/4 x 6-1/2 bore and stroke for 461 cubic inch displacement. This is the gas-start diesel, and what is unique on the gas-start diesels that IHC made in the 1930s is that once you start them on gas, the change-over to diesel is automatic after X number of engine revolutions. You do have to advance the throttle a little when it changes over to turn on the fuel.

You have quite project ahead of you. It looks like an interesting one though. I hope it goes well. I did not know that IH built those that far back.

yes, ihc had the first diesel engine built in 1934 , and the tractors and trac-tractors came out in 1935. and they were built to 1940.
while it took john deere 15 years later to get a diesel tractor which was the model R. in 1949.

Good looking project, TD35 and TD40 are some of my favorite tractors. What is the serial number, guessing that one that early will have many early options. Most out here in the palouse have the double steering brake update. Does it still have the original injector pump? Looks like it was always an ag tractor. Look forward to more pictures and updates, Mike

I won't be starting on it anytime soon. I still have a couple of other projects that are not finished yet....

In answer to a few questions, yes, this was an ag tractor, it was used to farm in north central Oregon. The trucker did deliver two TD40s to my place, but one is mine and the other belongs to Andrew.
