Out of retirement, back in the field. Sat for a long time, 2nd ring stuck, but left no damage to cylinder. After putting rings and getting head checked, what other things should I look for to be wrong. This tractor seems to be built like a tank. This is my first tractor and I am 54 years old and getting tired of digging potatoes with a shovel.

If the tractor wasn't sheltered I would check the oil pan & gear boxes for water. I would check some of the rod and main bearings. Check the crankshaft too.

In 1975 I bought this Farmall A for $100.00 along with the 16-inch moldboard plow. The engine was stuck. It needed tires, rims, steering wheel, wiring, fenders and seat. I pulled the engine and steam cleaned the block. I
removed all the pistons, sleeves and crankshaft.

I installed a new sleeve kit, had the crankshaft
polished, new bearings, tires & tubes, new seat and used fenders. New wiring too. Then I plowed my garden. Hal
PS: I removed a lot of crud under the old
sleeves.

if you haven't torn it down yet, or even if you have the head off,
pull the pan, fill the water jacket and check for sleeve leaks.

If you are staying low budget, since you have to pull the pistons for the rings, put new rod bearings in, same size that's in there now. (I'd do the mains too, same way)

Plane the oil pump cover and put in a new gasket.

And just a personal preference, others may differ,
if putting new rings on old pistons and sleeves (ball-honed)
I like a cast iron top ring, not chrome.
