I'm in the process of restoring my father's 1952 M. He and I rebuilt the motor/ transmission/ rear end, installed a new clutch and brakes back in the 70's in our garage one very cold winter. I was in Jr. High, didn't know much more than I do now about tractors. He had always talked about wanting to paint it to drive in parades and go to antique tractor events with it when he retired from his business. He sold out and retired in 2000, but his Parkinson's disease advanced rapidly, we lost him this last June. To honor him, I'm granting him his wish by making "Mable" shine again. The tractor had not run in over 10 years. When rebuilding the carb this week, I went to reassemble it after soaking it in carb cleaner. When I screwed in the fuel adjusting needle, the packing fell apart. The kit I had did not have replacement for it in the package. What kind of packing can be used to replace the ruined factory packing?

hopefully you did not soak the packing in carb cleaner, as that is no no.
but you should be able to find some strings of packing from the water pump, or something that uses packing. should be able to get small packing at good hardware store or such place.

If you are too cheap to buy it, just use a piece of store string after you saw it back & forth on a bar of hard hand soap.

I unscrewed the metering rod from the carb not realizing what was in the port was packing and not a plastic bushing. Yes, it soaked for two days in carb cleaner along with all of the other parts. I don't think the carb had ever been off the tractor, it was layered in crud. When I disassembled the carb, there was molasses thick slime in the fuel bowl.

I asked the question to learn if I could use any kind of typical packing material or if I needed to find some petroleum resistant to avoid leaks. Thanks for your response.

Last time I inquired about the packing at the dealer, it was twice as much as the cheap carb kit my local parts guy has, which contains the packing. But its probably just my local dealer since they are no longer in business.

Part is $1.26 at Macdonald Carb and ignition.
If close to a dealer that happens to stock it the dealer may end up being cheaper for just one after shipping.

I just picked up a couple of the packings from my Case IH dealer $7.95 and they fit. I guess that I have never removed the packing before soaking, because you have to distroy the packing in order to remove. I usually am able to reuse without any problems. The part number is 24703DA
