Back to the 560 knock

Hi guys

Worked on the 560 a little tonight. Dropped the oil pan and
took out the oil pump. The pan had about a half inch of sludge
in the bottom and the pump filter did need cleaned out. Check
the main and rod bearings and the were all within clearance.
The rods were between .0015 and .002. The mains were right
around .002. Checked all the piston skirts and they looked to
be in tack.

I was a little more curious about the tappet knock against the
cam. A few weeks ago when I was adjusting the valves I
noticed that two of the push rods were kinda messed up. The
tops of them had been egg shaped or at least not true like the
other ones. The adjustments on the rocker arms were also
messes up. Instead of being rounded on the bottom, they were
flattened. I had a parts tractor here, so I changed the bad ones
out. What would cause something like that. Is there a fix for
the tappets knocking or at least something I could look for to
identify the bad one.

Thanks for the help.

valve lash must be kept adjusted periodically, as in a major tune -up. too much clearance will damage pushrods and rockers. worn out lifters and cam lobes causer this. best to pull the lifters and have a look at the bottoms. they must be convex not concave. meaning the center of the lifter has to be higher than the edges. this creates the lifter to spin reducing wear. any engine that has prolonged idling will have valve train wear. idling at slow rpm is the worst thing for an engine.

Great advice. I will ad quality oil to the reduction in wear. With regular changes, and (low ash oil) the engine will wear very slowly. Jim

Sounds like those two valves could be sticking a bit and then when they turn loose... BAM.
With that going on several times a minute it doesn't take long for damage to occur. See if those valve springs seem weaker than the rest or if the end of the valve stems are higher than the rest, indicating seat recession.
