Farmall Super A Starting Motor

My Super A Has set up for 2 years under a shed. It used to turn over with the starter with no problem. Now the starter motor will spin but the bendix will not engage and the positive post on my battery starts smoking. can someone tell me what is happening.
Thanks
Charlie

The issue is likely to be that battery post.. Clean it, or replace it if it is shot. Once the starter gets full battery juice it should crank.. (Check battery water level in all cells, charge the battery) Jim

6 volt or 12 volt? i have had same problem with 6 volt. let me know what you find. it can be the bendix, sometimes they will go bad

I would remove the starter and get it serviced then make sure the bat posts are clean. The pos post where it is gorunded must need cleaning.

That type of starter depends on the armature quickly getting up to speed to engage the drive gear into the ring gear. If you have poor connections the armature may accelerate to slowly for the drive to engage. Fix the poor connections first.

Not sure how the SA is arranged, but make sure the battery ground strap runs right over to the starter, and bolts directly to the starter mount bolt; eliminates lots of resistance loss.

Start with the battery posts and cable connections.

1. It is FREE, or at most a few dollars for a battery post cleaner tool.
2. It is EASY. No heavy lifting or big bolts to remove.
3. It is most likely your problem. Starters do not instantly go bad, or go bad from sitting.

We had this exact problem last weekend with the Super C. Dad was SURE the starter burned up. After we took the starter off, took it all apart, fiddle-farted around, put it all back together, and tested it with a battery and jumper cables, it worked fine. Put it back on the tractor and... NOTHING.

Bypassed the positive cable with jumpers, and the tractor popped right off and ran like a top. 30 seconds of scrubbing the + terminal and + cable clamp, and it worked like new again.

Thanks to all. I took your advice and polished the battery posts and the battery leads, tightened the negative cable to the starter and she cranked right up.
