Magneto timing

Working on an M that I recently bought. Seemed kinda hard to start (it would start and run) so was checking things out and discovered I couldn't get the magneto to trip while trying to time it. I'm familiar with the procedure, #1 at TDC (pulley at first mark), move mag away from engine block until impulse trips. So I figure magneto must be a tooth or two off. After a couple tries, I've got it reset, now the mag trips at #1 TDC but it is at the limit of the adjustment. The mag is at the end of its adjustment closest to the engine block. All my other letter series tractors seem to time correctly with the mag somewhere in the middle of the adjustment. So, the question is, do some mags time at the adjustment limits or am I still a tooth off on the gear?

TD9 Not Starting
I just got a rarely used Adams 311 motor grader with a TD9 #70 it is giving me fits. Only worked on homestead and it has been setting for ten years, but was started every year till the old fellow passed. I found out I don't know as much as I thought as I did about the TD9's. I was not getting spark so I puled the mag cleaned (the condenser is weak). I went and pulled the same mag off my 42 T9 crawler and put it on the 311, no or very weak spark.. Brought it home, which is 40 miles one way, and this back and forth is killing the gas tank, reworked cleaned and set points and used the wires off my T9 and the CONDENSER IS GOOD all 20,000 volts WooooHoooo boy!

I am thinking the Ol Boy changed the firing order to keep people from messing with his stuff. The plug wires were out of order, and not 180 out ether

So now that I have pulled the mag, I expect to have spark when I get back to the grader.

is the rotation direction of the mag the same on the TD9 as the T9?

When I go the put the mag off my T9 on

Am I right in thinking that I will ether be in time or 180 out?

and then I will need to time it to mark " 0 " which equals 12.5 degrees ?

OR will the pump still be in time.... I'm not sure if it is independent timing?

thanks

Whit! What? How is this timing the mag again? I'm from West Virgina you have to SHOW me TWICE, as I hold up three fingers.
this is the first i have heard of anything like this. Email if you like
I think I get what you meant..
Bring it up to DC mark on the pulley Check the mag' button placement where it lies in rotation. when DC on the pulley lines up and the button lines up on number one cylinder, or just before number one cylinder where the little dimple is on the distributor cap,,,, JUST BEFORE IT SNAPS. That way when it hits number one it should be firing or in the ballpark.
If it is not lined up it is out of time so you will need to pull the mag again and turn just one more revaluation to DC and repeat the process until the mag button is pointing to the dimple in the distributor cap, IF YOU DON'T LOSE TRACK up to 2 times.

YES FOUND the problem with my TD9 AD70 46 Adams motor grater. The L lever is activated by starting linkage releasing spring pressure allowing the L lever to "POP" up. If it does not spring/POP up beyond the linkage retainer it needs some GENTLE help. The L lever flips the butterflies via rods needed, when using gas, to suck air into the per-combustion chamber and create low pressure (vacuum) in the carburetor for it to work too.
I think my air jet is out 3 or 4 full turns..

How to gently help the L lever and butterflies to move up and down
1. lots of Marvel Mystery Oil, on the seals that the rod runs through that the L lever is connected to and rotates.
2. let soak,
3. pull gas/diesel lever only HALF WAY and tie off... on the motor move with your hand the L lever up and down until both butterflies, butterflies can move independently of each other, are free and spring up by themselves more Marvel Mystery Oil and keep working them for a while.
4. pull gas/diesel lever to start position... back to more Marvel Mystery Oil and keep working the L lever and butterflies until they work in sync and freely .

Mine were really stuck..

(quoted from post at 06:23:04 09/26/14) So, the question is, do some mags time at the adjustment limits or am I still a tooth off on the gear?
I read on this site by John yesterday that if the timing is beyond its limit that it could be due to engine wear.

Update:
However I did notice after I changed Mags the adjustment on the second Mag was a little farther up the slot than the prior Mag. But I think that will also change once I get new plugs, wires, cap and button.

If I can get to run good on old just think how well it run on new.
