Saw a Farmall M last weekend at the show in
Elsberry Mo. with a serial number of FBK 117145
which acording to the book say's it is a 1946. My
question is. There is a suffix letters of XI or X1.
Why are they there and what do they mean?

FBK 117145 XI

Thanks--Walt

Is there anything unique to the 46 model?

The X1 suffix just means that the tractor came equipped from the factory to burn regular gasoline, not the lower octane tractor fuel blend, or kerosene, etc.

I think it has a high speed low @ reverse attachment, and the I, means it has a Rockford clutch! Both I and J represent a Rockford clutch, why mother harvester did it that way, i have no idea!

Yes, according to "Farmall Letter Series Tractor" book, X1 just indicates gasoline engine.

Well maybe your your right, but Walt says XI, your saying X1. Walt did u happen to see if it had the double gear shift provision on the transmission cover, some of those southern tractors were set up for cotton picking, it was called the Reverse Operation Attachment, you got the 2nd hole for the shifting socket in the transmission cover, different shifting rails, and the different gear for a different speed. Essentially you were going in reverse, but at the speed of reg M in 2nd gear. I don't live in cotton country, but i am sure some one does and has more experience than i do.

Ignore Mr Keller, he doesn't know what hes talking about. There was no XI suffix code, that I can find, for the M Farmall, or any other letter series. X1 would be correct, which as mentioned indicates a gasoline engine.

Thanks guys, that is a lot of help. Didn't know International offered gas only engines as early as 1946. That would mean the head and piston combination would be higher compression (than the all fuel version) maybe. There were a blue million Farmall Ms built and parts should be readily available This tractor was probably sold to a farmer north of St Louis Mo. and worked the hills and bluffs west of the Mississippi river. It would have been several miles (and counties) north from cotton country.
