Farmall H transmission problem

Hey folks.

Just picked up a 1947 H. Went to look at it, it has been sitting about 6 months. Fellow tossed a battery in it and it fired right up. I was impressed. Most of what is wrong with the tractor, I know what to do about.

The exception is the transmission. 5th gear is in bad shape. I can get it moving if I hold back HARD on the shifter, but it will still pop out and grind. (By hard, let me just say that I am 6'3" and 250, so I can put a pull on something.) Does this sound like anything that I can get to somewhat easily, or am I going to have to break it down to parade rest to get in and change the ___x___??

I am afraid you will have to tear into the transmission and replace the damaged gears. You will have to drop the belly pump and take the top off the transmission, but you will not have to split the tractor in half. Fortunately you will not have to remove the top or bottom shafts in the transmission, just the input gear cluster that unbolts from the front of the transmission and pulls out. If you are not familiar with how an H transmission works, to find out what gears you need to replace, before taking the tranny top off, look through the hole where the belt pulley attachment goes, move the shift lever into 5th gear and you will see what gear moves to engage 5th gear and the part that is worn.

No, I am not that familiar with Farmall trannys, but I follow what you are saying. That sounds like it is within my capability...I do not have a shop at the moment, so splitting a tractor is not really a feasible option, but pulling things apart and swapping parts...that I can do.

I took a picture of the page in the parts book that shows the transmission exploded view. #40through #50 comprise the input gear cluster and will come out as one unit when you remove the bolts. You will first have to disconnect and remove the shaft that goes from the front of the tranny to the clutch.

#37 slides forward and meshes with #40 to engage 5th gear. The machined teeth that mesh together have become worn from years of old farmers grinding them trying to engage 5th gear. Because of the big jump from 4th to 5th, when you are pulling a load the tractor has to be moving as fast as it can in 4th and then clutch and pop it into 5th. If you are very good it can be done without grinding but most were not or did not care.

There is a good chance just #37 will be bad.

Sir, You rock! Thank you very much. I ordered the manuals, but it will be a week or 2 before they get here. That gives me a good idea of what I am getting into.

Good point, I will check that out as well...there is a bit of...not slop exactly, but....wear I guess, in the feel of the shifter. Does YT carry them, or is there another way to recondition them?

Before you remove the top cover just go in from the front and remove the input gear and check the front bearing on the transmission main shaft, item # 38. Very often the problems that this bearing has failed. When that happens the transmission will not stay in fifth even if the gears are good.

most H transmissions I've been into, that bearing is trashed.
You have long arms, so aligning things from underneath and thru the belt pulley hole will be easy on reassembly.
While you have the front carrier in your hand, check its gears #40 carefully. Also check the constant mesh gear #63. common problem points
