200 Stuck Clutch

It is unstuck now so relax. I stuck it by jumping off my 6 volt 200 with a "HOT" 12 volt high amp battery in my pickup. I thought I had it hooked up correctly but I must have had the leads reversed. Usually the sparks will tell if it has been hooked up backwards but there were not any sparks. The 200 cranked right up so I was happy but when I went to undo the jumper leads the wires and grips were almost melting hot. The tractor sputtered a few times then caught up and ran fine. I knew something was not just right but moved the truck and attempted to back the tractor out of the shed. No go, it would not go in gear but just ground the teeth. Clutch was stuck to the flywheel. It was late in the day so I just shut it down. I had not removed the front planters from spring garden planting and needed to get them off. When I got back to it a couple of weeks later I started with the hopper mounts without moving the tractor and worked my way down to the drive control linkages and the mounted drill units. These required operating the touch control so using the crank I started up the motor. It took about a half an hour to remove the drive control linkages and I really wanted to removed the drill units elsewhere. On a fluke I made an attempt to put the tractor in gear and with a little grinding it went right into 3rd. Clutch was unstuck. I guess getting it warmed up loosened it up enough to break free trying to put it in 3rd.

There is gray hair here and I should know better but I am beginning to not trust myself. I was sure I had those leads hooked up correctly but that could not have been. I do not know how many times over the years I have jumped a 6 volt with a 12 volt battery but it has been a lot. Never have I had this happen before. Not sure if I did any other damage but it looks like the system was somewhat forgiving and the truck and tractor still run fine. I think I skated this time. Dad would have chewed me out good and walked around a while with his hands on his hips and looked angry. The angry part I did not miss but I would have deserved the good chewing out.

Lmack, the picture is of a battery explosion I had not long ago. I put some sticks in it to show how it split, it naturally blew the caps off too, but they are back on in the picture. I blew up a battery one time about 30 years ago, but it did not make the noise this one did. Strange part was I did not even make a spark. Found out the regulator failed and the alternator was putting out 16 volts steady. Well, after 2 hours of mowing I shut the tractor down for several minutes, when I went to restart it...KaBoom.
Sooo, I won't chew you out, but will remind you to be careful!
Best Regards,
Charlie

You didn't necessarily have it hooked up incorrectly, with regards to polarity. Some will say jumping a 6V off a 12V is incorrect as the day is long, but not me. A 6V battery charger on the "boost" setting puts way more voltage into a 6V battery than any 12V battery can.

A flat dead battery will cause excessive current flow through the jumper cables. If they're not real heavy duty cables, they will get hot.

You missed the first sentence in the original post:

"It is unstuck now so relax."

He goes on to describe the issue with starting the tractor.
