300 utility bearings

nj tom

Hey Guys, It"s finally time to do something about my low oil pressure on my 300 utility. I would like to pull out the crankshaft and have it ground and install it back with new rod and main bearings. my question is, can I get the crank out by just removing the oil pan? can this job be done with the engine in the tractor? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance.

I'm not familiar with your model , some of the letter series had a cover you could remove to get the clutch & flywheel out but I think you'll need to split the tractor to remove the clutch & flywheel ....

At the very least, the engine has to come out. Front and rear covers and plates taken off along with pulley, flywheel etc to get crankshaft out. I would also make darn sure the camshaft bushing are in good shape because they are fed in conjunction with mains and can cause low oil pressure as can condition of oil pump.

NJ TOM, hay not so quick,Unless that 300 has been run out of oil, or been severley neglected on the oil change intervals. my guess is that crankshaft is still good. Yes u have to totally disasemble the bottom end to get the crankshaft out. First of all take a oil sample and send it in to a lab if u have the time,it will take about a week to get your results back, and you can usually call the lab, to save a little mailing time. You can mic the rod journals, with the engine in the tractor, but impossible to get a micrometer on the main brg journals! If your going to do this by your self, you better get a I@T shop service book.

Pull the engine to get the crank out. If the bearings are worn out, chances are it will need a sleeve kit too. Drop the pan & check the oil pump 1st. If the gasket is bad or plate is grooved too much, that may correct the problem.

i didn't mean to imply that u can remove the crankshaft with out removing the motor, first i would do is a compression check, with the throttle in the advanced position and like Pete and Teddy said check the oil pump bottom plate first, If it's got a grove that u can feel, take it to a machine shop or replace!

Thank you guys for all your replies, I should clarify that I have normal oil pressure when I start the tractor but it drops down slowly as I use it, and now it has gotten to the point where it drops to 10lbs after about 1/2 hour of use. since the pressure is normal when I first start it up I am assuming the oil pump is okay and it is probably main bearings.

Tom, i am not a expert,i think the oil pump maybe is ok .It's easier to make pressure with cold oil than, hot oil. The oil test will tell what kind of metal u have in your oil, Engines are designed for the bearing's to take the brunt of the wear, and protect the crankshaft, and IHC had nice big bearing on most models of that era.!!! good luck
