timing a farmall C magneto

I need help. I have timed this before but now I am stumped. I follow the procedure like I always have to time it. I put new points in the tractor and it has good spark. I am trying to get it timed again. I go through all the steps to get it rough timed. Now in the last step when I go to pull the magneto away from the tractor to get it exactly timed, I can't get it to click to get it exactly timed. It is like it needs a little bit more room to move it, but there isn't any room. And when I pull the magneto off to try to re time it and put the tractor back in top dead center, it clicks right when I pull it off. Any ideas. Thanks

That can happen easy. After it clicks turn the engine over a little then but the mag back on that way the impulse wont be loaded. I remove the mag after it clicks so when i put it back on the impulse wont be loading. You didnt turn the gear that runs the mag as you could have it out of time also.

Gene- how do you time the gear that runs the mag? Also I thought that I would want the mag loaded so that when I pull it away from the tractor and it clicks, it will be timed right? Maybe I am just missed understanding youm

With the timing mark on flywheel aligned with indentation of flywheel cover, pull your magneto as far as it will come out, lock it down, turn engine until it trips and see how far it has to turn. Up to five degrees after top dead center is perfect. If more, well, something is amiss. I know there is no 5 degree on that model but a little head scratching can figure that out. About 1/2 inch,

i was having the same issue, and i came to find out
that the H4 magneto i bought on ebay was for a gas
start diesel, and that the rotation was converted to
clockwise and the shaft keyed to a different degree,
it was clicking but only at when every cylinder was
half way down TDC. just my suggestion

Bring the #1 piston up on compression, then back in up till almost dead bottom. Turn the mag so the rotor is going to be at #1 plug tower when it snaps. Then install the mag, you will have to turn it to match the gear slot. Bolt it down with the bolts in the center of the hole slot. Then slowly turn the engine the right way, and watch the timing marks when the mag snaps. If it too fast, bring #1 up a little more, and try it again. Its called trial and error, but that's the way I do it.
