I have never replaced a IPTO shaft on a 886 or similar tractor , splines are worn , will the three bolt housing (pictured) remove from the front with out removing the surrounding housing and bolts and without splitting the trans from the rear end ?

Ih dealer said it can be done and the IT manual is vague about the procedure.

the three bolts are removed but the housing doesn't seem to loosen any when pried on or taped with a hammer . there appears to be a black RTV sealant that was applied before it was assembled before , that maybe all that is holding it .

I really don't want to open something up that I can't reassemble without splitting it again or removing the cab to do so . thanks

The RTV sealant must be what is still holding. There is an O-ring that seals it. Sometimes they take a bit of a tap to get them to come out.

Will come right out, just must be stuck. Here are a few pictures of a clutch job that I just did on a 966 tractor. Your splines sure don't look wore bad compared to the one that I had to replace.

to add to what the others said: the "surrounding housing" is the front end of the TA. last thing to come out of the trans. now might be a good time to take a look at the clutch bearings and linings and the rear crankshaft seal.
