300U steering case dowel pin

When I bought my 300U years ago someone had taken it apart and never replaced the dowel pin.I've never been able to keep the steering case tight because of that. I took it apart and put everything back together the way it should be. Now I need the dowel. Messicks site says to call.I don't know if that means not available. I&T manual says to ream the hole first so I don't understand how a pre-made dowel would fit anyway. Has anyone replaced the dowel and how did you do it or find it. I'm thinking I will have to have one made. Mine is a bit larger than 5/8 so I'm thinking I can't buy one off the shelf.Need some advise on this one.

Turn it (or haveit turned from 1144 Stress Proof steel. If turned to fit the sockets as they are, plus .0005" they will press in. Don't ream the sockets as you run the risk of misalignment. Jim
