Hey folks,

I was thinking about buying an H that is for sale down the street. I went to look at it and it does not have a PTO...it does not look like the housing is even there. Did IH make an Industrial version of the H? It is a wide front, row crop tractor...I thought all, or at least most of the Industrials were standard type tractors?

Question is this. If I buy this, can I put a PTO on it, from a parts tractor or something? if so, how hard is this to do...ie, do I have to split the tractor to do it, or just drop the cover plate and slide the shaft in carefully...etc?

Thanks!

Just remove the cover plate and install the correct PTO unit for whichever lower transmission shaft is in the tractor. Early tractors used a dog type clutch. Later models have splines.

All that stuff was an option. I saw an H once at a show that had no options at all - no PTO, electrical system, belt pulley and had steel wheels. It was interesting to see.

PTO was an option. The ones that didnt have one had a cover plate from factory. Yes, you can add one. The wide front I believe was an option too. The O-4, OS-4, and W-4 were different versions of the H. They went by the McCormick Deering name, and therefore did not have Farmall on the hood emblem or decal.

Thanks guys! I bought a 47 instead of that one, since I did not know. I still might buy it, and give it a home...it looks mighty lonely sitting out there in the cold! lol. I will have to go give it a test drive...the one I bought has a trans problem...but a good pto, and belt drive, and belly pump......hmmmmm.....
