backfiring H

Ive got my H running pretty dang well if you ask me. But, when going down steep hills, and being held back by the transmission, I get the occasional backfire and small flame shot out the top of the muffler. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the backfire, can I tune it out through the carb? and if so which direction do I want to go? leaner? richer?

Pretty much normal. Just drive it and enjoy.

If you installed a solenoid operated fuel cutoff in place of the load screw (from a newer farmall) you could shut off the fuel with a button when going down hill!
The engine has no emission controls. so when under down hill coasting, it sucks fuel from the carb through the circuits. This fuel is too low in density to fire in the combustion chamber, but when it gets into the exhaust system it becomes near normal atmospheric pressure and will burn with just a little spark. when it is ignited, it fires off a dramatic report. Normal!! Jim
