We recently acquired a mower with the number 45-8888-RI on it. It works great but the bar broke that has the teeth on it. I'm not familiar with tractors so i am hoping someone can help me. What is it called? Sickle bar? Its the one with holes that you can put the teeth on w/rivets. the mower is old and not sure if we can weld the "bar". I'm trying to find the part for my husband. Any suggestions on finding a new or replacement "bar" would be greatly appreciated!!!! It is 6 ft long.
Thank you!

That part number shows up on several models of mowers (100, 1120, 1200, 1300, maybe others). In any case, the broken part you are describing is called the knife. Knives on most IH mowers were interchangeable, subject to a few considerations.

There were a couple styles of knife heads (where the part that moves the knife attaches). Some had a ball/socket others used a bolt. If your existing head is good, it can be attached to another knife.

Cutter bars (and thus knives) came in different lengths. You may find a knife that is too long. If so, you can easily cut the replacement knife to the proper length with a cut-off wheel.

There were several styles of knife sections (the part that rivets/bolts to the knife). This isn't a problem unless you get sections of a different thickness than the originals. If so, you may need to adjust the hold down clips for the new thickness (by bending them with a hammer).

There are probably some sources for new knives but they may be expensive (maybe CaseIH). You can probably find used ones. Start local. You didn't mention where you are. If you do, someone may be able to suggest a place to look. If your broken part is the bar itself, you probably won't have much luck welding it. If the head is broken, your chances are better. Either way, be careful about warping when it is welded and be sure to grind down any places that will run against other parts. Cutter bar parts need to be true and well adjusted for the mowers to work well.

Thank you so much for all the info!!!!! We are in West Virginia.
At least i have the info i need to find one now. I appreciate it!
Great to know that it can be shortened if we find a longer
one....no its the knife that is broken, not the knife head. Thank
you again for the excellent description and info!
