Where do I locate the part # for my M distributor?

I'm getting ready to buy the Pertronix Electronic ignition kit for my 47 M. According to this website there were a couple of different distributors used in a negative ground setup. Where do I locate the distributor part #?

I don't know anything about the electronic ignition requirements, but if you were buying replacement points and condenser you would just need to know the manufacturer of the distributor, be it IH or Delco, etc., and the model of the tractor. There's normally a manufacturer's insignia on the dist. --Lee

The numbers are stamped around the mounting collar. The clamps holding the distributor in place may be covering some of the information.

The verticle one is a Delco Remy. Horizonal could be either I-H or Prestolite. Got to be a tag or logo or something to id the one you have.

If its a IH you won't find a part number for the complete assembly on the distributor. Like Owen said there's a code followed by a serial number at the base on most of them. Almost always need the retaining clamps off to see. But since the same unit fits onto a lot of IH tractors the code just tells what tractor or tractors the unit was supposed to be used on.
Looks like YT is using the number for the distributor housing and its usually found on the largest round area below the cap on the outside of the unit.
By the YT description it looks like you want # 1142 for a 12 volt negative ground if its a IH distributor. Didn't see one listed for a 6 volt neg. ground. Could have missed it didn't look to hard.

The prestolites I've been around have the IH logo on them. The difference is the IH is made of cast iron and a Prestolite is aluminum.

Almost all 4 cylinder IH distributors used on tractor engines basically designed around the forties or fifties used this number housing. Guess YT wants to to make sure its that type distributor. Then its up to you to chose the voltage or ground type wanted.

Call Pertronix direct and the techs there can help you. That's where I got the information for which kit I needed for my tractor.
