C-153 Cam / Crank Timing Marks

I'm in the process of rebuilding a C153 out of my 504. The manual doesn't mention anything about timing marks, which I found odd. The cam gear has two sets of marks. One mark is at the root of a tooth, and almost 180 degrees around, there are two teeth next to each other that have marks on the peaks. I would assume that the single mark lines up with the crank, and the double marks line up with the distributor / governor drive gear. Does anyone know if this is the correct alignment? Thanks -

The IT manual has a picture but it is of an early C113 block without provision for an hydraulic pump.

If the marks are 180° apart it doesn't make any difference since by the time you rotate the crankshaft one turn you will be lining up with the other set of marks.

Generally if you have a gear with one mark on a tooth and the other gear with marks on two adjacent teeth you would line up the single mark between the two on the other gear. If you find two marks on the same tooth one one gear you would match that up with two marks in the valley of the other gear. The same with single marks. Line up the one in the valley with one on the tooth of the other gear.

(quoted from post at 05:05:08 09/17/14) That doesent apply for that engine.

Since I gave several scenarios that can't all possibly apply to this engine, but one of them does.

Without knowing how the other gears are marked I can't tell exactly what applies here.

On this engine the marks are [i:2118e3fcf3]almost[/i:2118e3fcf3] 180 apart. If I line up the single dots and rotate the crank 360, the mark on the crank will then be one tooth off of the second set of marks. I should have sprung for the IT manual, as the original IH 'manual' doesn't even mention these marks. Thanks for the info guys-

But if you turn it over again the marks wil then line up remember the single dot is TDC on #1 piston and it only fires after four turns as the othere cycls need to also go thru the four cycles intake compression power exhaust watch the rotor when it is in TDC on #1 then the dots will again line up

I found a better depiction of the timing marks in the I&T manual for the 444. It is a drawing rather than an outdated picture. It also describes the procedure in text.

[i:4e01129d89]When reassembling, mesh the single punch marked tooth on the camshaft gear with the single punched marked tooth space on the crankshaft gear and the double punch marked tooth on the camshaft gear with the double punched marked space on the governor and ignition unit drive gear. Refer to Fig.40.[/i:4e01129d89]

Thanks for the info guys. I tried the incorrect timing method, and the top parks couldn't have lined up with anything while the crank / cam set was lined up. The posted drawing above was just what I needed. Thanks again -
