When to replace rear tires

Anyone have a rule-of-thumb for when to replace rear tires? I have one that is weather-checking badly, but holds air (12.4x36 tire).

When the tube starts to show. I have a machine that some one told me over 15 years ago I needed new tires and it still has the same tires on it that was on it back then

it depends on work that you are doing with the tractor. if you are pulling it hard, so that tires slip some, you will want to replace tires sooner rather than later.

if work is light, then by all means let the tube show.

Replacing tires is more often a financial decision than a practical decision. They have gotten so expensive that you have no other choice but to put off replacing them as long as possible.

That said if you find a good deal on a usable used set... It might be worth changing them out. If your old tires were round and black and held air, they're worth something to someone else whose tires were not round or black or held air.

Thanks, guys. That helps. I am in the light use category, so I think I will wait and watch for those tubes to start showing.

Thanks,

It can and will happen with no warning. I pushed snow one day, got more snow that night, and then had to use a scoop shovel to move enough snow to get the truck out of the garage so I could go and get 2 new tires for the snow-pushin tractor. The side-wall on one of the rear tires split open far enough to not only let the tube out, but then the tube got pinched and ruined it also. Should have put new tires on a few months before that, when it was actually warm enough to be doing such things.

If doing light work, wait till they are no longer holding air. If doing heavy work, wait till the ruber bars are about bald. I don't like to have the tire guy come out to the farm to change tires in bad weather. You might want to consider that too. Is it going to have to be changed right away when the time comes? If so, you might not want to wait till one is flat.
