F12 Magneto Installation Question

Working on my '34 F12. Trying very hard to get the engine ready to test run before I paint it.

Nebraska Kirk rebuilt my mag, actually took two mag's and built me one.

I can't tell from the parts book, service manual or owners manual what I'm missing here. Just doesn't look like I have all the drive couplings or something to hook it back up.

I think I can get it installed and timed, IF I can figure out what I'm missing. Thank you in advance for your help.

It sure looks like you have all the drive coupling parts you need. Have you tried mounting the magneto and can't get it to fit or do you just think something is missing?

You do need the 4 bolts for attaching the magneto to the base and a couple of short 1/4 fine threaded bolts for bolting the two halves of the coupling together.

I thought I had everything...

With the mag bolted to the base, there's about an 1" or so gap between the mag drive gear and the coupling part with all the holes in it (the part with red paint still on it)

I know my terminology probably isn't right.

This was my old mag, that someone had screwed up trying to use an external coil. It seemed to be coupled up fine.

I don't understand whats wrong. My old mag had the entire back part of the housing gone around the impulse coupling.

I see the problem. You need to use the impulse coupler off your old mag. There is supposed to be a round tin cover that goes over that impulse coupler that is held on with two spring clips.

Sorry about that, I should have swapped impulse couplers when I rebuilt it.

Kirk, Doesn't that require a puller and stuff to do that? How easy is that to do? Am I better off sending it back and letting you do it? I don't want to screw it up...

I certainly don't mind to pay you to do it...

Yes, a special puller is needed to remove the incorrect coupler. The correct coupler will actually pull itself off as you unscrew the retaining nut. If you want to send it back, you certainly can and I will change it, no charge. I will look and see if I have a tin cover too.

and I bought a brand new cover for the other one from Frank Rice...I guess it's useless. LOL

I'll box them up and send them out to you Monday in the USPS. Thanks ever so much Kirk. I learned something today...didn't know there was a difference in the F4 mags.

Thanks all for your help

See if you can get the impulse coupling off the old mag. Put an impact wrench on the nut and unscrew it. It SHOULD pull the coupler off. If it works, then just send me the coupler and the rebuilt mag and I will swap them. That would save having to ship BOTH mags back and forth. Also remove and send the flat plate that is behind the coupler on the old mag.

There is a Thicker version of the black ring that has alternate slots on alternate sides that is about 1" long. That and 2 screws should get you going.

I wish I knew where I could get one of those, I'd buy it. Otherwise I guess I'm gonna send it back out to Kirk in the mail today.

Sending the mag back to Kirk in the morning mail. I was able to remove the impulse coupling from the other mag without hardly any trouble.

After all the discussion last night I got my parts book out and read it more thouroughly. Here's the "readers digest" version of what I learned since last night.

F-12 from '32 to mid year '33 used the E4A mag

F-12 from mid year '33 (S# 2049) thru probably mid-late '35 (S# 27393) they used the F4 mag with S# 501-38847

F-12 from mid-late '35 (S# 27394) through end of production they used F4 mag with S# 38848 & up
