966 Batterys. Charging 2 6 Volts

Quick Question.

To charge my 966, Hook Positive Clamp to Positive Post on the Battery going to starter and Negative Clamp to Negative on the battery with the Negative going to the frame ground? Right?

Use 12 Charge setting?

Yep,

But, an easier way is to hook the positive charger cable to the alternator "BAT" terminal and the negative to the tractor chassis.

that is a lot easier. thanks allen.

do you run ih batteries or??? seem like they go 3 years to the date you bought'em and bamm!!! Dead

Allen that is a great idea!

Probably would work good for a battery maintainer over the winter too, yes? No?

We always had to charge the batteries separate on the 966 and 856. I don't know why, but it never would charge across.

Also be careful if you have electronics in there. I fried my Tee Jet sprayer controller this spring when the batteries went south on the 4440 and I tried to charge them hooked up. Now I know - unhook and charge separate just like we did on the old IH's.

Probably because you were trying to charge them in parallel, by hooking to the + and - of one battery.

That doesn't work. The batteries are connected in series. Two 6V batteries to make one 12V.

You need to hook to the + of the battery that goes to the starter, then the - goes to the frame. It can't help but charge like that.
