What are the cons of 886 w/o the ta. Came from factory that way. Could one be installed in it?
I have only experienced the t/a on a 350 I used to have. It was handy.

No difference than any other nonTA tractor.Yes,you probably could add TA,but it would be EXPENCIVE.By the time you buy the TA unit, correct MCV,Related transmission parts,Linkages, handles, other necesary parts, not to mention labor....You would be better off just buying a different tractor.A bit more unhandy? No not really just different.Definitely NOT a deal killer. AND!!!!you never have to worry about the TA going 'out'.LOL

Factory TA deletes are starting to see an improvement in price over TA models. As the Factory delete is more uncommon.
I would rather the TA delete. I have never had a TA in one that worked so never missed it. We have 4-6 tractors that would normally have one in them.

Both replies reflect what I was thinking, but I had read a comment or 2 that said factory deletes were kind of weak(I assume because of less gears) and way lower in value. I have never driven that style of IH so I am unfamiliar with the gearing. Thanks for the help.

Dad had a 1066 with factory TA delete back in the 1980's and early 1990's. It was a nice tractor. Had no trouble finding a suitable gear for any job (8 forward gears and 4 reverse gears). Only thing was you had to stop to shift if a speed change was desired. No shift on the fly capability minus the TA but that was no big deal for us at all.

Frankly on any roughly 40 year old tractor, I would rather have the TA delete. One less thing to fail and we all know that TA will eventually fail as it is wearing whether it is used or not.

I would worry more about the TA if the tractor were a front line machine, out there for 8+ hours a day, 7 days a week.

A lot of these are on small farms or are secondary/chore tractors on larger farms, and don't see near the hours that they would have back in their heyday.

With as much as we use them, it's not worth losing sleep over the TA. If the TA is good, it's likely to last decades. If you put the investment into replacing a bad TA, it will outlive your grandchildren.

TAs are simply not that "weak link" that the haters and naysayers want to make them out to be. A bad TA is either badly abused or just plum worn out from DECADES worth of use. This isn't something you have to replace annually.
