H Fuel tank hold down springs

Hello,

Quick question... the Springs that are used on the fuel tank mount bolts, does anyone have a recommendation on a suitable replacement spring? Mine are pretty rusted and while I could clean them up and paint, it'll be a pain in the rear so I think it would be easier to just buy some new ones...

thanks!

I wish I had a sand blasting setup... Thanks for the advice to both of you. Matching them up at the hardware store is probably the easiest idea.

The IH part # for spring is 51124D. NLA from Dealer of course so go to www.tractor-part.com and enter that part number. Two suppliers show that they may have some.

Quicker, easier and cheaper to try rusty and Bob's ideas first.

Might try Farm Equipment Parts stores. At the Case/IH Dealer where I worked we tried to stock springs together in drawers so we could just pull out to look at them when matching up, which we did a lot.

Good luck, Bill

Also we have several places around here that do custom sand and soda blasting. Maybe you could find someone close for that also.

Not a critical application. Finding a suitable replacement shouldn't be too hard. Rust pits on springs are the kiss of death under a cyclical load. They create "stress risers" which will cause premature breakage. Since these springs are essentially stationarily loaded, the pits shouldn't be much of a problem. I wouldn't be afraid to use them if replacements can't be found.

I built my own sand blasting cabinet a few years ago. Built it entirely out of scrap plywood and shipping pallets. It ain't pretty, and if I had it to do over again I would do a few things different, but basically, it works. Probably gets used at least once per week for little jobs such as the springs you are talking about plus a few other odd things that have nothing to do with tractors. It is probably one of the handiest and most often used tools I have in my shop.
