Farmall 560

My 560 was hard to start again. It has sit for 3 weeks, I don"t think it is the glow plugs it is not smoking when trying to start. When it started I ran it then next day starts just fine( glow plugs 60 sec. spins over 5 sec.). Does any one know what could be going on? This has happened 3 times in the last year. It runs great and batteries are hot and spinning motor plenty fast but it normally will smoke a little blue before start up except for the hard starts. Any ideas?

Maybe a small leak in a hose or tube connection is letting air into the fuel line. Or a check valve, or some internal leak causing air to get you air bound.

Could be oil draining away from the rings and cylinder walls resulting in low enough compression to the point it doesn't want to pop off.

Especially so, if it only does it after sitting long periods of time.

He says it doesn't smoke, so I would think lack of fuel. Even low compression will give fuel vapors looking like smoke.

I think lack of fuel is the problem. It will start normal most of the time but like I said it has happened maybe 3 times this year (sitting between starts seems to have nothing to do with when the problem occurs) .I was hoping that some one had this same problem. I am thinking maybe shut off plunger inside pump sticking. This just has me baffled.

Did you leave it shut off with the pull shutoff cable in the out position. It is possible that the metering valve could stick in that position so push cable back in after engine stops. There is no definite shut off piston. What really takes place is you move the metering valve far enough that it no longer delivers enough fuel to open the injection nozzles. I know if I was working on it and it did not show smoke, I would first check for fuel flow at the inlet to pump. Finding a good flow there I would pull cover off top without disturbing anything and take a look at metering valve. It should be all the way back against the limiting smoke screw. Oh, by the way, always pull throttle wide open when starting for max fuel delivery and be quick on the throttle as soon as it fires to slow it down and keep holding the glow plugs until it is running and firing on all cylinders.

Thanks guys I think pete 23 is on to something.I did check fuel flow to pump and it seemed ok.If the metering valve is sticking what would cause this and how can I fix it? I think I will try to kill it in gear without using shut off, do you think that will work? This does not happened all the time just 3 times(out of about 100 or so starts) in the past year.

I wouldn't kill it, just push shutoff control knob back I right away after it dies. If metering valve is sticking usually a few yanks on throttle back and forth should move it. Some time they do unexplainable things to you. The top of metering valve forms a flat spot and it is pointed when new. Also, the guide stud gets the flat spot. Just turning the guide stud a tiny amount will put you on a new spot but of course this has other effects also as it is the adjustment for the automatic load advance on the pump. I have replaced many metering valves and guide studs over the years.

Pete 23 I always push the kill cable in ,but I noticed it was maybe 1/8 from fully forward(run position) I have re-adjusted it to go fully forward.Do you think that would be enough to cause my problem?I have never started it with throttle over 1/3 open( usually glow plug 60 seconds now at 90+ degrees) and have had it for 4 years, but I will try wide open and see if that helps.
Thanks for your help.
