B250 glow plugs

I have a 1950 International tractor in New Zealand. How and why are the glow plugs wired up the way they are with insulators between the 2 wires? The local shop has sold me 11 volt glowplugs, but the external thread is too short to take insulator and both wires. Can I grind the insulators thinner?

Got it now thanks. Should the number 1 cylinder glow plug still have a lead earthing to the water pump? She seems to start easier already, just can't ascertain that from the photo if the earth is removed under this new system

Does this mean each plug is earthed to the block and there is no common earth any more?
