chargeing system

My 100 needs a new battery ,my question is change to 12v.or leave it 6 volt. it was not charging the last time it was used. i replaced the regulator once and started charging but quit after a few months,i know how much a reg. cost but a little scared about fixing the generator i heard that can get pricy fast.also what about a 8v. battery, not much different i price between the three of them.

simple test with engine running ground the field if that makes it charge the reg is bad make sure when you get a new reg it is made for the gen you are using there is a tag telling the # of the gen. Way too many just go to TSC or someplace and get a reg as they think one sixe fits all. You need the correct one and they will last forever if you keep things up to snuff. I have several cut-outs in service still but the gens are in shape and use good cables on the batts and the batts will last 7-10 yrs.

I have been told a 8v. battery is the way to go. will a 6v. system charge a 8v. battery and will a 6v. charger charge a 8v. battery. in other words i have got to buy a new battery regardless before i can get it going.

Either fix the 6 volt or go to 12.

If 6 won't operate that little tractor you have other issues.

My M work perfect on 6 volts.

Jeeper55, a knowledgeable person can tweak the generator regulator to charge an 8v battery, but if you have 6v lights, they'll suffer, as will the points and to some degree the coil. If the 6v system has been working for you and all you need is a battery, why not just get a battery? Going to 12v is an option, but you'll need an alternator (some say Delcos with an external regulator work better at low rpm than the single wire ones), modified brackets, perhaps a new belt, new wiring if it has an output higher than 25A, a 12v coil or a dropping resistor for the 6v one, or go to a 12v electronic ignition, in addition to 12v (1195) bulbs for the lights.

Boils down to if the battery is the only problem, or something(s) else in the charging system, and how much do you want to spend? I'd check the existing generator as indicated above, and go from there.

I'm getting close to switching my SA to 12v, even though the 6v battery is still good - the regulator is starting to give problems, and I'm doing more work 'down the road' on some rented land, so would like to put flashers on it for safety. If you're close to WNY, I'll give you a great deal on a still good battery.

I have thought about 12v. system because i know either the v.regulator or gen is bad. I changed my old 9n. ford over to 12.volts but i just bought a kit and it was a piece of cake to change. another point with a 12v. is it is just easier to jump off if the battery gos dead.

If you are interested in changing over to 12 volts with an alternator, drop me an e-mail (it's open) and I will tell you about a kit that I have available. charlieu
