SA gear box fill level

I think I'm losing my marbles because I can't find a fill level plug for the gear box on 1948 Super A. It's not where it is supposed to be. I searched the archives here and can't find any mention of this anomaly. Do I just drain and refill 4.5 quarts? Does it matter much? Can I stop looking?

Sandy,
It should be on the left side, near the bottom of the gearbox, and, it will be behind the brake linkage rod. Perhaps someone wrung your plug off tightening it, its only a 1/4" plug, might be hard to see. Otherwise, just put 4 1/2 quarts in and you should be fine.
Best Regards,
Charlie

Thanks and I know it should be there but it is not! We have a 130 and a 140 and that is exactly where the fill level plug is on them. But this A??

There is a pulley and it has what looks to be a fill level plug or drain on it but it is too high to be the level plug for the gear box.

Whole thing has me laughing. I"m just going to fill 4 and 1/2 and away we go.

If it were mine, curiosity would get me. I'd be tempted to pull the top cover off and look inside while it was drained. I think you should be able to see the level hole from the top. Easier to fill through the open top anyway.

I get that. I"m not going to do that today.

Anyway, the gear oil change is done. I"ll check
back later in case anyone else has an A like this
one.

I just looked at mine , and the plug is directly below the front fender mounting bolt and behind the brake rod . Maybe it's covered by hardened grease ??

The pulley gets its lube from the tranny there is a galley in the tranny that drains to the belt pulley and also a return but sometimes that galley gets plugged stoping the lube from getting there.
