Brake drum is rusted to spline and I was wondering how much heat I could use to get it off or is there a better way. The seal is leaking so I need to get it of to replace seal. Thanks in advance.

I have seen them so rusted that they were removed by using a die grinder and cutoff wheel. I would start with a good puller and propane torch heat for 10 to 15 minutes. Hitter (I mean Hotter) may be needed. Keep the heat on the hub, not the shaft. Cooling just the shaft from the end can help. Jim

IMHO, you need oxy-acetylene. Save the propane torch for sweating pipes and toasting marshmallows. A propane torch won't put out enough BTUs to heat that chunk of metal quickly enough. The heat will have time to transfer into the shaft, which is what you don't want.

Can you get a puller on the drum? I'd use the puller to put a little pressure on it and heat it with the torch until it moves.

You can use all the heat that you want because you're replacing the seal anyway. But, you won't need to get it red hot.

Go through your tool box and take out the three oldest worst small straight slot screwdrivers you own. Then grind them to a sharp chisel point. Now use one every 120 degrees and tap them in sequentially When you get the drum 1/2 inch out then it's a back and forth battle. Use lots of penetrating oil on the shaft.then use all the crowbars, prybars, pullers you got that will move it. A prybar with some wood blocks will work.
