806 Transmission updates?

Ok, So I'm finally starting to put the Range transmission and final drive back together on my 806. I know, I owe some pictures. It turned out to be worse than I thought, the pinion gear was trashed, too. I got a new one from IH (Ouch!) What I now would like to know, Is there anything I should be doing special? Like Special procedure for tightening the nut on the range trans. main shaft? (It was not very tight when I took it apart.) Also, in Bermuda Ken's book, he mentions drilling the casting and removing the plug behind the inner axle bearing race so that oil readily flows between the rear end and axle castings. Is this an update in the 56 or 66 or 86 series tractors? Also, is this recommended to be done? (By IH or individuals) I'm also wondering, in general, is there anything that I NEED to know that is not in the IH service manual? Like things learned by experience? Thanks! -Andy
 
i think at some point in the production of 06 series, IH changed the final drive design. don't know how important it is.

can't help much other than, assuming you have the rear top cover off, now would be a good time to look at the clutch pedal pivot shaft, by now it's probably due for replacement, along with its o ring.
 
Tighten the nut to specs then drill a hole thru it into the shaft and drive in a 1/8 rollpin to prevent it from coming loose. Drill the housing and remove the plugs. Makes it much simpler to maintain, no filling and checking the final drive housings individually. Just fill the transmission and go. The final drives will always have the proper level of oil. It was mid-production 56 series that IH began to drill the housings and eliminated the plugs.
 
You said nut on range transmission main shaft. That would be the pinion shaft and just tighten the heck out of it as it has to hold the spacer, carrier and pinion bearing tightly together. Lot of them work loose over time. If you mean the nut on lower speed transmission shaft, well you will get a hundred different answers on that one. I tighten it, back it off just a little, with cleaned threads and extreme Loctite plus the locking washer. Reason to back it off is those lower gears find a pattern and if you tighten it down tight you will get a noisy speed transmission and they will eventually loosen up again anyway even with the heavy spacers over time. On the oil circulation, I never drilled any hole in housing, just knocked the plug out of housing. It doesn't circulate as well as with the hole but it works fine and a whole lot of tractors are running around that way.
