IH 606 w/2000 Loader

Going to look at an IH 606 gas with 2000 loader for
my sister for an acreage tractor. Said to run good,
clutch and brakes good, T/A works, gauges work, not
sure about lights. Excellent rear tires and rims
with one set of weights. 2pt fast hitch. Missing
covers around battery box.

Anything specific to look for on these tractors
other than the usual? Are they good reliable
tractors? I'm thinking a utility will be better for
her than a row crop. Guy says $4000 will buy it so I
think the price is really good for this area. Thanks
for any input.

A lot of IH utility tractors with loaders ended up with steering problems. I'm not familiar with a 606 but I suggest looking over the steering parts carefully.

A 606 utility is basically the same tractor as a 504 utility except the 606 has the 6 cylinder engine. I have a 504 utility (gas engine) with a 2001 loader that has been on our farm since new. I have considered buying another 504 and a 606 with loaders and one thing that I have found with some of them is that they can have hydraulic system problems where the loader is noticeably very slow to raise. The one I already own works perfectly so I am lucky to have that one for comparison.

The 504 that I have has been well maintained, but worked hard on the loader. It will lift a 1500lb round bale, but it is really too much for that little tractor. The power steering has worked well up until this year I noticed that it is beginning to get a little stiffer to turn than normal. I will wait to see if it gets worse before I tear into it.
The clutch on this tractor will grab, especially when the T/A is pulled back. The brakes have been poor since new--they work, but you need a strong leg to really make them work well. The three point hitch works well and is very strong. We did a lot of square baling with it--it worked okay for that too. We never pulled implements with it, so the T/A is original and still works fine. It is a good little tractor, but I am very accustomed to it's quirks--sort of a like member of my family.

You didn't mention whether gas or diesel. I had a 606 gas for a couple years and found it underpowered for the tasks that I used it for. It has a C221, same as the 460 utility, but may be rated a bit higher in HP. It would have been handier with the C263 like the 560 and 656 has. In fact, the next generation after the 606 is the 656 utility. --Lee

Red I can fix you up :) Most of the IH tractors had two hyd pumps available, I think the 17gpm is the big one, helps with a loader a lot.
And time for a plug, I have a nice 504 gas Farmall for sale.
