Need some help a man has a nice straight 656 gas all original W.F. 3pt paint looks good for age Says only 2500 hours needs back of seat.I usually buy bigger tractors so need some opionions on its value.Tires look to be 50% plus. Thanks

I bought a gas Farmall 656 a couple years ago with twice the hours, new tires and a recent CaseIH dealership overhaul for $5200. My tractor has just the standard drawbar with three sets of hydraulic outlets as it was mainly used as a cultivator tractor in Indiana. The tractor was exceptionally well maintained (with complete service records from it's original delivery when new) and in very nice overall condition and fully functional. One thing you need to know about the 6 cylinder IHC gas engines is they require 93 octane fuel and low ash engine oil. Although both are easily available I haven't found a fuel supplier that delivers 93 octane fuel to the farm so I have to haul it from town. I use it with a New Holland small square baler and as a hay wagon hauler along with other general farm duties, Hal.

Just saw a NICE one sell last weekend with a new looking loader for over $6000. It went higher than the low houred 856 that was there.

If I may ask,why do you think you need to run 93 gas? I have run alot of hours on that same rngine and it has never had anything but regular 87 pump gas. It would be a pain to get gas from town especially if you use it very much.

Location? Check the heat-riser spiral on the manifold, a tell-tale sign of hours. If really 2500 hours, it should still have original tires. Do the tires look like 1967s or so?

On page 6 of my original 656 Operator's manual the Fuel System section for gasoline engines states "Use clean fuel having a minimum octane rating of 93 (research method).
It has also been discussed on this forum numerous times and using fuel of a lesser rating in the IHC six cylinder engines can lead to engine damage from pre-ignition. Sure it is somewhat of an inconvenience and I have a separate tank and haul it from town in a 100 gallon tank and fill the tractor from my pick-up. I have never used the tractor for any tillage work so fuel usage hasn't been that much of a real issue. I would rather error on the side of caution instead of destroying a really good tractor and engine.
You may be just lucky or have your tractor detuned for the 87 octane fuel you are using but luck usually isn't my friend and I'm not a gambler, Hal.

Hal,I must be lucky according to you. The 756 has a little over 8400 hours on itand has been overhaulded once. Bought it new when I was working at a IH dealership. Only used it for a few years on tillage work. It wasnt powerful enough for that. The rest of its life it was on a feed grinder of witch it got a work out. When I overhauled it I overhauled it with M&W kit. I was kind of hoping it would blow up soon. Because after harvest it will be torn down and a 466 with 1066 front frame and sheet metall put on it to make a puller out of it for 7500 lb class. I guess I am lucky!
