horsepower difference between a Super A and a 140?

Is there a horsepower difference between a Super A
and a 140? What is the horsepower of each if there
is a difference? I've been told all a 140 is, is a
Super A with different sheet metal...more or less.

Super A is powered by a C113 engine (113 ci) and the 140 has basically the same engine, the C123 (123 ci). Thats a 10 cubic inch difference. You might want to go over tractordata website and look at the power specs.

Bottom line, 140 has more rated horsepower. But the condition of the tractor at this point in time probably is more important. A Super A in top notch shape, carb, compression, weight setup, etc would probably out work a 140 in sad condition.

With both being in equal condition the 140 would be slightly more powerful tractor according to tractordata specs.

hope this helps.

The last Super A's built used the same block as a Super C. The A received a thicker sleeve in the block so it could use the same diameter piston that they had been using which kept the cubic inches at 113. Lots of people that have rebuilt those engines decide to install the Super C piston and sleeve kit in them. If that has been done it the Super a would have slightly more power than the 140 especially if they installed dome pistons in it. That's what I did to my Super A.

The 140 engine is 10 cubes bigger, has a higher compression ratio, and turns more RPMs, so all things being equal it is quite a bit more powerful than the Super A.

Of course, fresh Super A vs. tired 140... All bets are off, but that's what you're going to get these days.

The 140 also has different transmission gearing to take advantage of the power from the extra RPMs. It's slower in 1st because the Super A was really too fast in 1st, and 1st was too close to 2nd anyway.

Don't forget there are two different series of Super A's. The early Super A's had the C113 with provision to drive the hydraulic pump from the A with no water pump. The later Super A's have a C123 which has a belt driven water pump. That version of the C123 was used last on the 130's. The 140's have a newer version of the C123 with some updates, the water pump is placed higher and also runs the fan, by doing this they were able to eliminate one belt off the front of the engine.
