400 rear wheel

Last spring I installed new rear axle seals in my
400. This summer while doing hay and going down a
blacktop, the thing rocks back and forth. I removed
the whole wheel, tire and rim assembly on one side
but on the other side the bolts holding the axle
clamp were frozen. I cut them off with a torch and
removed the tire/ rim and then the center wheel
casting. When I put it back together, I tried my
best to have the rim centered on the cast wheel when
I tightened the clamp bolts and feel I got it really
close. Using a large wrench as a feeler gauge it
checks close but not perfect. The other side that I
did not have apart checks farther off center. How
close do these have to be? I guess I will make up a
go/no go gauge to set them real close to being
centered to see if that corrects it. It will have
to wait untill haying is done so I guess it is a
winter project. At least the axle seals don't
leak:)

well don"t know what this rocking back forth is. if you don"t have them tightened evenly they will have some wobble.
all you have to do is make sure all clamping surfaces are clean and use never seize on the threads. then just tighten the bolts in a star sequence lightly. not just tightening the rim down in one spot. that will put it out of whack right there. I just give them 3 tightening sequences and have never run into a tire wobbling. basically the rim cant really get too much out of true cause it is pressed against the hub and the clamps are just holding it there.
and also when you push the tire and rim onto the hub you jack up the tractor and the rim basically falls into place.
