I was wondering if the muffler is supposed to be a silver/grey color or black? I have seen several sho tractors with the muffler painted either color. Anyone know for sure?

I have gotten new mufflers that were both colors new. The last one came grey, the one before that came black when new. Put them on how they came. Wondering if the mufflers you have seen were just simply put on the way they came when new. As for what was the technical color when new from factory, I can't tell ya. Don't think it matters much. These tractors have all had muffler changes several times since they were new.

All the Farmall tractors in letter seires came silver. We had a lot of Farmall in our area when I was growing up. The black came in later as a replacement and you could get silver or black. There were some after market that had a gray color.

Mufflers can come black but would not be considered original. IH and Stanley mufflers are "aluminized" this means an electroplated coating of aluminum is used to make it silverish. Aluminum oxidizes easily and readily at 1000 degrees. More than this is found when working a tractor engine at tillage, belt or PTO. Thus the rusty burnt look in the middle of most mufflers. Stainless Steel mufflers that last way longer still discolor, but are more colorful in the "look". Jim

I'll have to look at exactly what it is but I have a can of silver duplicolor "high heat" or "header" paint that is good to 2000 degrees. Followed the instructions to apply it, and "baked" it on by running the muffler through several "heat cycles" on the tractor.

I painted my 450s muffler with a automotive ceramic paint that you put on like you described. Haven't used it under load to see what it will do. Doing some pulling right now and have a stainless steel stack on it.
