c301 timing problem

I am in the process of putting a 301 in my 460. I have it
installed but will not run when timed correctly. I have put #1 tdc
checked timing marks on the cam gear and crank gear and
there meshed together with the marks perfect and the rotor
button is pointing towards #1 cylinder . The firing order on the
block 1-5-3-6-2-4 distributor turns ccw. I hook the wires to the
cap nothing . I pulled the distributor out and rotated 180
degrees it hit and run changed plugs around to smooth it out .
The tractor will start and run this way! I am at my wits end with
this thing. I have put a silver diamond head on it also and it is
firing out the cap on all six wires . Nothing about it makes
sense . If any one has any ideas I sure would appreciate it.

Crank/cam timing marks are for cam timing.

So you've set them correctly.

Now, move on and IGNORE those marks. Bring # 1 up to TDC on the compression stroke, and set the distributor to fire #1 (as you obviously have done, 'cuz it runs.

Now, set timing to spec with a timing light (or by ear, as some chose to do).

Bob thank you first of all for the help. As crazy as this May sound it is firing first off of #2-1-4-5-3-6. With number #2 being at 1oclock on the cap. When I pull #1 and #4 loose it doesn't make any difference in the sound which tells me there not firing correctly and they are firing.
