IH 986 Power Steering - clutch problems

I have been using an IH 986 and plan to buy, but it has developed a problem. I need some help! The Hyd - trans indicator light stays on until you get above 1500 rpm, and the power steering is also very very stiff until you get to higher rpm. When the clutch is depressed, the indicator light comes on irregardless of rpm. Even worse, the tractor won't move until you get to higher rpm and then it will lunge, almost throwing you out of the seat.

We have changed the hyd - trans filter and have checked the oil level. It is a late 1978 model with a TA. The TA has not worked in years but they have always kept it in the high position and not had any problems until now.

Does anyone have any ideas? I would like to know something before I buy the tractor.

The MCV valve and pump were overhauled last Fall by an independent mechanic. The mechanic now seems to think that the problem could be the TA or that we mounted the MCV incorrectly.

What do you think?

If put a rebuilt MCV pump in, throw it away and put in a new one, they dont last or work worth a dang, any other problems, I would start there.

Thanks for the advice Mike!!
Are you talking about a new pump from a Case-IH dealer, or are there good aftermarket new pumps?

new hy-capacity is best in my book, when I worked at IH, we used all hy-cap parts and I still do today at my repair shop, good luck

Since the problem affects the steering it is highly unlikely that the problem is the TA. The steering gets priority oil before the brakes and TA.

Look for a blown O-ring between the MCV and the clutch housing.

I have found the pump at the Hi-Capacity web site but I cannot find a dealer for Hi-Capacity parts. Can you give me the name or web site of a dealer.

Thanks to everyone for their advice! I seem to have just fixed the problem. I removed the flow divider plug & spring, and found that the flow divider was stuck.

Using a drill bit as an "EZ OUT", I was able to pull the flow divider out most of the way. Could not remove it because of hydraulic lines, so I just moved it back and forth several times with a screwdriver. It moved easily all the way in and back out. I put spring and plug back in and everything now works fine.

I don't know what caused it to stick. It may do it again, but at least now I know what the problem is.

I just bought a 986 and am having the same problems as you described, I do not have a shop manual, can someone tell me where the flow divider valve is located in the system. Thanks

This should help.
