Re: Magneto and distributor gear timing

If I am reading your post correctly, what you are seeing is NORMAL.

The rotor will stop at a point AHEAD of the #1 HT terminal, "til the impulse trips, then pass the terminal at the instant the points open/spark occurs.

If you actually have lined up the correct timing marks, you have done your job, and all is well.

put the dist cap on and attach the wires . put a plug in the end of the number one wire and lay the plug on the tractor body , not in the plug hole. crank the motor over and see if you get a spark on the plug. no spark than something else is not working correctly.

(quoted from post at 23:16:43 09/01/14) Therotor is ready to fire get the cap on and wires correct and it will start.

Still no joy, but I found the culprit - carb float was stuck flooded. I forgot to turn off the fuel from my last attempt to start before working on mag. I pulled the breather hose loose from the carb, and gas ran out. I normally turn the fuel off and run the carb out to shut this tractor down, so had never seen this issue since I have owned it. I don't know whether I have trash in there, or a pin-hole in the float. I get to tackle that this week. The spark is there and it appears correctly timed.

Thanks for all your help.

OK, she purrs like a kitten now. Went out there by myself, early in the morning, nothing in a rush. Evidently the problem was being sure I was on #1 TDC compression. I pulled the valve cover off, turned it til both #1 valves were close, moved it on up to the timing mark, and followed the rest of the drill. She started on the 2nd pull. 8) 8)

Thanks for all your help on this!
