885 case ih tranny problems

The linkage that controls the shifting fork for the low gear is what I am having trouble with. When your going around side of hill or unlevel ground the low gear slides over an jams the transmission. I have it all apart. What it looks like to me is that gear has nothing there to hold the gear. No place for the fork to go. This is all new to me. Got the tractor in on a trade so don't know the history of it. Don't know what is missing. Any help much appreciate it. Thanks

Hi Warren,

I am exploring transmission issues myself. Jimb2 kindly directed me to your post. I hope we might be able to assist one another.

In looking at the parts manual for my 584, and it appears the shifter fork has the ball and spring assembly that maintains the fork in position.(which appears to be in the shift fork itself) Could the spring /ball bearing be broken or missing in the shift fork assembly you are working with?

OR are you speaking of the linkage outside of the transmission? Does your tractor have the Z pattern, or H pattern shifters?

If you need a copy of the parts manual page I am looking at, just let me know.
