farmall 806-Starter problems

I am having problems with the starter on my 806. I had the starter rebuilt by a reputable shop, but when I try to start the tractor I have to push the starter button several time before the gear on the starter catches the ring gear. I took the starter off and to it back to the shop and watched while they took it apart and tested it. It worked perfectly. I have inspected the ring gear from the little window on the right side of the tractor and all looks ok no flaring of the teeth or excessive wear. I have checked the key and started button and all are ok. So my question is why won't the starter catch on the first try. It's as if it is hitting the ring gear between the teeth and will not engage. I have take the starter off and inspected the gear on the starter and there is no excessive wear visual to the eye. I do not know what to do. Any advise? thanks

Years ago a few times we had this problem on some S model ihc/navistar trucks with DT466 engines. And it would be the the key switch. You could try to jumper wire to the small terminal on the starter solenoid direct from the battery. Also you could measure the voltage there while actually trying to crank with a good voltmeter;if it is low,I would back check to the button and the key switch for low voltage. Also you could jump across the back side of the button;that would bypass the internal contacts of the button.Be sure to be in neutral! You say it acts like it is not engaging the ring gear. Is the starter motor spinning when this happens or is it just a thud or click of solenoid. If starter is spinning it is a bad overrunning clutch in the starter drive gear. They can sometimes be difficult to detect when they are apart. Have to play with the gear trying to make it slip rearward. If just clicking or clunk, I suspect voltage drop through switch, starter button, safety start switch or wire. Easy test is to jump from battery connection at solenoid to small terminal on solenoid but that involves some danger as you need to have tractor in neutral and in park, throttle closed for testing purposes.

Any chance your battery ground strap runs someplace OTHER than to the starter mount bolt?? That"ll cause loss of voltage, the current going through all the rusty joints on the way back. Made a big difference on my IHC.

Check the wire going from start button to starter solenoid. Over years the harness will corrode inside wire coating and drop voltage. If you don't have proper voltage in wire it will give you false start or nothing at all. If you check the voltage and don't have minimum of 11 volts it wont energize solenoid. I worked at dealer and saw this numerous times. Those tractors are 50+ years old.
