Farmall B Clucth drags

Just finished full restoration on the B. No matter how I adjust the clutch I cant get the trans to slow down to get it in gear. If I put it in gear and start it it has a squeaking, squealing sound with the clutch pushed. It pulls good with no noise when driving and no noise sitting in neutral with clutch out. I can see the disc move back when released. It is free on the spline. Any Ideas?

If the driven disk hub got tweaked when it was put together it will drag. The pilot bearing (if not replaced and lubed) will also do that irritating squeal. I assume the pedal freeplay is at about one inch. Jim

It was dragging when I first started it around memorial Day. I started it in gear and held the clutch down for a few minutws and it worked fine. Step on the clutch and pretty much down to a stop. It sat until today and now it is dragging again. I tried the same routine but it has a sticky spot if you turn the belt drive with the engine off there is a sticky spot. I can hold the belt drive with the motor running and turn it to the exact spot that it squeals. but a lot of squealing later it still hasn't worn off and the squeal is getting louder and more constant. The pilot seemed good and I greased the shaft when it was put together.

Even very minor wear on the splines on the clutch shaft can cause a disk to not center and float to the space between the Pressure plate surface and the Flywheel surface. Turning it and having it squeal in one spot indicates either splines are worn, or the clutch shaft might be bent. Jim

Also if the clutch disk is installed back wards it can and will cause a problem like that

Your last sentence says a lot. Clutch shafts, like starter drives, need to be clean & dry so the disc can slide freely.
Other main causes of your problem are also mentioned, bent disc or disc in backwards.
Looks like it will need to come apart again.
Sorry to bring bad news.
Willie

I did grease the disc splines when it was assembled. I can see it slide back a little when the clutch is pushed while running but it may be the issue. The squealing is a mystery. The shaft looks like it is running true, no vibration at all, clutch operates good. No grabbing, chatter, etc. And it is a new pressure plate. I did reuse the disc though. It was in perfect condition with good amount of lining on it.

This morning the clutch works good. comes to a stop when pushed. The squeal is a random chirping now. The only thing I can conclude is the pilot bearing may be making the noise. I'm wondering if it will eventually work in and stop making noise or if I have to split it.

It may be that the fingers on the pressure plate aren't adjusted right, or there may be drag on the shaft from the pilot bearing.

It is not possible to put the clutch disc in backwards

well. Split the tractor. Ground a sixteenth off the diameter of the disc. Cleaned everything up. Grease on pilot and everything was perfect. Came right to stop. No grinding for 10 minutes of driving. Came to stop and it is as loud as ever. Loud scraping, squealing sound when clutch engaged. Can stop it by engaging belt pully and turning by hand until it is in a quiet spot. Slowly rotate pully and there is a spot where it just howls. Do you think I should just get a new disc?

I wish it was impossible, I put one in backwards in my SA, and had to replace the clutch. It worked but made a loud scraping noise while engaging. I knew which way it goes in and put it in backwards anyway. Not sure that the H/M up disk can be installed wrong.

Measuring the diameter of the pilot bearing, and the shaft snout will tell you if the bearing is out of spec. It should be no looser than .003" to assure a centered clutch. If you take it apart again, look inside the flywheel to see if the disk is touching the inside diameter of the recess. Jim

At this point I think the disc is defective some how. Now it chatters badly when engaging. like it is warped or has a high spot. Most likely it is sloppy on the spline. I didn't think to slide it on there when it was apart. I am going to split it again and replace the disc. I will post back once that is done. Maybe I can find a disc from a vender at the Thresheree In Edgerton Wisconsin today when we go to the tractor show.

Be sure the fingers (if adjustable) are very uniform in height to assure a clean engagement and release. Jim
