starte grinding

I have a 1955 Farmall 100. Recently it started to grind the starter
when i went to fire it up. I got another starter and it ran fine (no
grinding) for a week or so. Then it began to grind. It starts right
up and then grinds for 5 seconds Or so. then the tractor runs
fine.there is a trace of wearing away the ring gear…but why did it
run ok for a week??? I hate to replace the ring gear

Be sure that your starter switch is releasing fully. The ignition push-button switch on my 656 sometimes sticks and doesn't release the starter promptly, resulting in a grinding after the engine has begun to run even though my finger is off the button.

Good thought (And i thought i had thought of every possible thing). I will check it out first thing in the morning Thanks
