Case IH 685-No cooling system pressure

I have a 685 that I was using to rake hay. Noticed it was running hot. Checked the rad. No pressure and half empty. Topped it off and finished raking. With rad full, machine ran at temp. Got done and checked the rad. No pressue. Could I have a cap that is bad and no sealing, letting the rad boil the water out gradually over time? The rad was still full but no pressure even after running tractor for an hour. Whats the deal??

Caps are the most common cooling system failure. Look closely, there s a small mushroom like disk (atmospheric valve) on the bottom center, it should be held closed by a very light spring. Its rubber should be in good condition, as should the rubber that seals against the neck flange. The tension spring that applies pressure is also a failure point in that it can rust or corrode away. The atmospheric valve is to allow the cooling system to draw in air as it cools off, this prevents collapsed hoses or components like top tanks. New caps are cheap. Jim

Hi, as Jim said rad cap, also check that water pump is not leaking down the front of the block. Also first thing in morning before starting the tractor, loosen the oil pan drain and make sure that there is no coolant coming out before oil. The older German Diesel had a problem with the O-rings at the bottom of the sleeves leaking. Does your 685 have a coolant filter to prevent sleeve cavitation? I know 95 series have it and it is supposed to be changed as per Operator;s manual.

Simple things first.
