Farmall 140

I recently purchased an old farmhouse with 3 acres of
lawn and pasture. I am in the market for a tractor
and am partial to the 140 ( my grandfather had one).
I will use the tractor mostly for mowing but also an
occasional tilling and trailer hauling. My questions
regard a finish mower: is there a readily available
pull behind mower? is the offset PTO a problem? Can I
use other implements with a belly mower attached?
Should I consider another tractor?

A belly mower is a rather permanent installation. It doesn't easily allow the PTO shaft to be used by any other implements. With the mower deck in place it also would limit ground clearance for other jobs like raking hay, tillage duties and the like. Pulling wagons and trailers would still work OK, though. --Lee

I have been using a pull-behind Bush Hog on my 140 for 15 years on about 15 acres of open field. I don't think a pull-behind PTO finish mower would be practical unless you have a wide open lawn or a golf course. They just don't turn very well and backing up is a major exercise. I have a 38" Honda for the lawns (about 1.5 acres) so I can get around the trees and deal with complicated boundaries around the house/driveway.

You are probably talking a turn radius of 50 feet, if such a mower exists. The rotating driveline does not allow a sharp angle on turns and you can't even use the separate right/left brakes the way I do in the fields as it would chew up a lawn. Pro finish mowers these days are all zero turn radius. My next one will be too, if the 30 year old Honda ever dies.

That said, the offset is not the issue. I run the mower offset so the driveline is straight to the PTO. This allows you to get closer to fences and other obstacles on the left side which is helpful.
