5th Gear not working on M

1945 M that won't go into fifth gear at all. It used to work, but you would have to hold the shifter in place for it to work. Any suggestions on how to fix the 5th gear?

Probably need to replace the gear as its worn from shifting not an uncommon thing to happen. Shift fork could also be bent and is the pin worn that holds the shifter lever.

Remove the belt pullet gear box or cover plate for the opening. Look at the condition of the internal teeth on the 4th and 5th sliding gear. Also condition of the external teeth on the rear of the input shaft pictured. Shake the shaft to get a idea about the bearings that support the shaft. Check for excessive movement or damage of the bearing on the front of transmission shaft that pilots into the input shaft. Check to see if the shift fork is moving the 4th and 5th slider far enough when in 5th. With tractor not running and no pressure on the gears see if you feel resistance of the shift lever when first moving it out of 5th. Internal teeth of gear near yellow numbers engages the teeth on rear of the shaft for 5th.
