560 diesel smoke or lack of?

Ok this might be a stupid question but I been watching a
bunch of videos and reading about pulling with a 560 diesel
I asked for some help before my first pull with the 560 and first
pull on a transfer sled and got a lot of good input
My question is some people told me low gear for weight of my
tractor and classes I would be pulling in and videos I watch
showed that as well. Well my first pull I tried 3 rd and had to
use ta and was about outta power when I spun out in the 9500
pound class so in the 10500 class I tried 2nd took first place
not bad for newbie and took 2nd in the free for all pull in 2nd
gear as well never struggled for power a bit now I get a little
black smoke when pulling a hard hill or on acceleration but
when I was really pulling hard on that sled not a lot of smoke
Now in the videos I have seen these 560 say in low gear in a
lighter class and they are really pouring out the black smoke
and seem to run outta power what am I missing or what do I
have?
Only thing I know on my 560 is i bought from second owner
who bought from the widow of original owner who farmed with
it and said had a engine overhaul 10 tp 12 years ago and had
not gotten many hours on it since
It runs nice when cold start might only smoke for 25 to 30
seconds then clears right up
Why do those others seem to blow so much black smoke and
run outta power and mine smokes little and seems to have
good power?
Some day I will find a dyno near by to really see
Thanks for your time dan

A properly tuned and tight 282 should smoke very little, had an overhauled one that would start at 10-20 degrees with glow plugs only with no smoke what so ever, a jacked up one is a different story, the 301 G+D's will get close to 100 Hp stock

yes , the 282 will only show a greyish haze in the exhaust even on heavy pulling. those black smoker"s have the fuel turned up and who know"s what else.

That was a loose track in the picture.A power track like I pull on will take every bit of my Dynoed 65 hp ( turned up a bit to 2100rpm"s)in first direct in weight clases above 8100#
It will blow a pretty good haze when pulling hard.

Around here on a tight track a good running 560 will have its hands full in 1st high, maybe 2nd low with 16.9-38s. We also run alot of weight on the nose to keep the front end down, once the front comes up the hitch goes down and you loose alot of your hook. We try to keep the tires no more than 6" off the ground.

Alot of times with the extra black smoke there isn't any extra power, sometimes it hurts by overfueling. There is a point where it will make maximum power, less fuel will make less and more fuel will make less. Only way to find out is with a dyno.

Hi as others said to much smoke can hurt you more, than you gain. if it was my tractor and a few more pulls on it. if you are still competitive and happy leave it alone. Your tractor would be what I call a sleeper, Nothing fancy, and goes really good for what it is. If it continues to go well I"m guessing the Usual winners will be crying cheat on ya L.O.L.
Good luck, Regards Robert
